MUNRO HOUSE WANTS YOUR BEST CREATIVE IDEAS

Munro House is home to a wide range of creative doers, makers, and

dreamers. With an art gallery, café, recording studios, Duke Studios

and a host of creative and digital companies making this their base.

We are looking for someone to create something for the exterior of

our fine building that gets people looking and thinking about Munro

House. We’re located opposite the Bus Station in the Arts Quarter

of Leeds (West Yorkshire Playhouse, BBC, Yorkshire Dance, Northern

Ballet etc).

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

We want you to create something that grabs passersby, car drivers

and train passengers by the short and curlies, generates some chat,

enlivens the surroundings and makes the residents proud. We want

to put Munro House on the map and we believe the talent is out

there to do it.

WHO CAN ENTER?

Anybody with a great idea or five! Come visit us and find out more

about the building, the residents and our future plans. Artists, designers,

architects, musicians, we are interested in hearing from everybody.

Whether you are based in Leeds, Yorkshire or Barcelona we want

you to respond to Munro House with your traffic stopping ideas.

HOW TO ENTER

Come and meet with us on the 15th February 6-8pm for an informal

look round and to discover more about the building and it’s residents.

Then respond imaginatively by the 3rd March. You can submit up to

5 ideas and we’ll want to see an outline sketch per idea using the plans

provided. We’re looking at an outline budget of £10k*, but if you want

to play your wild card and share your dream idea (it’s all in the strictest

of confidence) then go for it! You never know.

WHO’S JUDGING? (Other than the Munro House residents who will

whittle everybody’s ideas down to a shortlist)

Colin Oliver: Has fingers in the following pies: Futuresound, The Cockpit,

Dance To The Radio, Pronto Management, Slam Dunk, Calls Landing

Stew & Oyster Bar and of course Munro House.

Paul Logan: Paul trained at the Royal College of Art. He practiced

in London before moving to Italy. He is now based in Leeds where

he works within a wide range of design disciplines. He is also a visiting

lecturer at LMU.

Laura Wellington: Is Co-founder of Duke Studios situated in Munro

House. When not transforming the whole of the first floor into a creative

co-working space Laura also runs her own design practice supplying

both the UK and international markets.

Ellie Halls Schiadas: Ellie is co-owner of Leeds Gallery and Café 164 with

her boyfriend Matthew Andrews, a graphic and web designer. Ellie and

Matthew select and curate all of the shows at Leeds Gallery and work

with the intention of breathing new life into the city’s art market.

Emma England: Director of RIBA Yorkshire, a member of the

C20Society, sits on the board of Integreat Plus and Concourse, the

Leeds centre for art, architecture, construction, landscape, planning

& urban design and has a place on the Sheffield Sustainability and

Design Review panel.

Alex Nelson: Design director at Elmwood and caretaker of

FormFiftyFive, Alex is both a creator and curator of digital design

and arts around the world.

WHEN WOULD THE WORLD GET TO ENJOY

THE COMMISSIONED WORK?

Work on the installation will begin early April to be completed by the

end of May 2012.

Leeds Gallery, Munro House, Duke Street, LS9 8AG. Situated in the Arts Quarter of Leeds, we are just by the BBC building, Yorkshire Dance, Music School and, of course, the Wardrobe. Opposite the Leeds Bus Station, the gallery just a 5 minute walk from the Town Centre.

About the Sessions

The Leeds Life Drawing sessions are held every week, usually on a Wednesday or Thursday. Not for absolute beginners, the sessions are an opportunity for creative and artistic types to come along and draw for a couple of hours.

The model is provided, and basic materials of cartridge paper, charcoal and boards but everyone is welcome to bring whatever materials they want.

Whether you are interested in developing your own style, building your portfolio up or just enjoy drawing, Leeds Life Drawing provides a platform for people to pursue their own interests within life drawing, rather than follow a specific taught regime and particular way of drawing.

You do not have to commit to a group of sessions, just take it session by session and see how it goes.

PLEASE NOTE: Classes will be once a week for May and June 2011. We will be alternating Wednesdays and Thursdays so check the calendar to find out which day it is on.

Places can be booked via the EVENTS page or via the calendar on the right hand side.

The session will be on Thursday 14th April 2011, at the usual time of 6.30 – 8.30pm, but will be at the Papergirl exhibition at Test Space, Unit 2 – 4, Melbourne Street, Leeds LS2 7PS.

At the end of the session, everyone will have the opportunity to donate some of their work to the Papergirl, who will then distribute it to the unsuspecting people of Leeds! (more info below).

Have you heard of the Papergirl?

Originally created by Aisha Ronniger in 2006 in Berlin, Leeds will be the fourth UK city for Papergirl. 2011 is Papergirl Leeds’ UK debut and hopefully the first of many.

We need artists of all shapes and sizes. Printers and illustrators. Mixed media artists and photographers. Whatever it is that you love to do! We need your submissions of artwork

The art of giving art!

Every single piece of work submitted will be shown in the Papergirl Leeds Exhibition from the 8th to the 17th of April 2011. The venue is a new art space – Test Space, Unit 2, Melbourne Street, Leeds (behind the Reliance Bar – North Street).

After the Papergirl Leeds Exhibition, all submitted work will be rolled up and distributed to the unsuspecting public by Papergirls (and boys!) on bicycles at the Papergirl Leeds Ride Event in May.

All submitted work needs to be between A4 and A1 in size and must be able to be rolled up. Please write Papergirl Leeds and any contact details you would like for the lucky person to receive your work (perhaps a lovely message too?).

21st March – 1st April 2011

The LLD headquarters at Woodhouse Lane are currently being transformed into a pop-up gallery which will be open to the public from the 21st March until the 1st April.

Life drawing enthusiasts, students and anyone who is interested in seeing what we have been up to all these months will be able to come along and see some really fantastic work.

Opera North & LLD
LEEDS LIFE DRAWING present a special evening of Life Drawing in association with Opera North.

On Thursday 10th February 2011 Leeds Life Drawing’s Thursday session will take place at the Howard Assembly Rooms @ Opera North, The Leeds Grand Theatre, 46 New Briggate, Leeds, LS1 6NU.

In an exciting experiment, we will be drawing our model within a walk-through exhibition by German born artist Mariele Neudecker.

The Howard Assembly Rooms is a vast space, which, once filled with the light, sound, film and sculpture installations by Mariele Neudecker, will provide an interesting backdrop to a life drawing session.

The session will run later than usual from 8pm-9.30pm to allow the exhibition to operate its standard opening hours to the public.

For this event, tickets have to be booked in advance and the price is £7.
All materials will be provided and there will be easels available as well as boards.

LLD | Guerilla Life Drawing

LEEDS LIFE DRAWING is proud to announce a new and exciting event for January 2011!

On Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd January 2011, Leeds Life Drawing & Birds Yard boutique will collaborate in a two day life drawing event.

The event will take place on the beautiful top floor of Birds Yard, 83 Kirkgate, Leeds LS2 7DJ (just down from Kirkgate Market)

Ideal for fashion students, this is a different type of life drawing. Observe and record how clothing falls and drapes on the body. Look at the patterns and silhouettes created, and draw inspiration from vintage pieces and contemporary design.

The day will be made up of two sessions each lasting 2 1/2 hours.
The first session will be 11.30am-2pm & the second session will be 2.30pm-5pm.

The cost per session is £10 and if you would like to stay for the whole day it is £16.50
As with the standard Leeds Life Drawing sessions all materials will be provided and in addition there will be delicious food, drinks and cakes!
